A Taste of Senegal in Fredericton
At Kindred, we believe that community is built through connection, support, and, of course, great food. This Black History Month, we wanted to go beyond words and take direct action to support local Black-owned businesses.
During our recent Caregiver Drop-In Session, we were honored to feature the incredible flavors of Fatou’s Healthy Eats Healthy Sips. Our caregivers enjoyed a delicious spread, and one lucky attendee even walked away with a gift card to experience the cafe’s magic for themselves!
Meet the Heart Behind the Flavors: Fatou’s Story
If you’ve frequented the Garrison Night Market or the Boyce Farmer’s Market, you’ve likely smelled the mouth-watering aromas coming from Fatou’s stall. But behind the food is a journey of determination that spans from West Africa to New Brunswick.
Originally from the picturesque town of Somone, Senegal, Fatou’s culinary spark was actually ignited by a bit of “tough love.” After serving her father a meal, he humorously noted it was “fit for survival only.” That critique turned into a lifelong mission to master the art of flavor.
Her mother, Rokhaya Cisse-Sarr – a skilled chef and entrepreneur – was her greatest teacher. Today, Fatou carries on her mother’s legacy in every dish she creates.
From Senegal to 440 York Street
Fatou didn’t just bring her recipes when she moved to Fredericton in 2019; she brought a wealth of hospitality experience. From earning a bartender certificate at the renowned Baobab Hotel to managing properties and catering across Senegal, her business acumen is as sharp as her chef skills.
Today, you can find her at her café at 440 York Street, offering convenient grab-and-go options that don’t sacrifice health or heritage.
What’s Next for Fatou?
We are especially excited about Fatou’s upcoming launch of her signature beverage line! Keep an eye out online and in local stores for: Red Bissap (Hibiscus), White Bissap, and Tamarind Drinks
